FAQs

Why is water backing up through my basement floor drain?

A blockage in the main sewer line can force wastewater back through the floor drain, which is often the lowest drain in the home.

It can also happen during heavy rain, when municipal sewers are overwhelmed and water pushes back toward homes. That’s a real concern in low-lying areas of the Metro East near the Mississippi River. A clogged main line needs cleaning, and storm-related backups can often be prevented with a backwater valve.

If the slowdown is limited to one sink or tub, try plunging it first. If that doesn’t help, use a handheld drain auger and check the stopper or P-trap for trapped hair and soap buildup. Hot water can help loosen grease in a kitchen drain. If more than one drain is clogged, or the clog keeps coming back, the problem is likely further down the line, and DIY tools won’t reach it.

When multiple drains back up together, there may be a blockage in the main sewer line. Another clue is water appearing in the tub or floor drain after you flush a toilet or drain the washing machine. Stop using water and have the main line cleared, because continued use can push sewage into your home.

Chemical drain cleaners are generally not recommended, especially for the older cast-iron and galvanized pipes found in many Metro East homes. The caustic chemicals can corrode aging pipes and rarely clear a serious clog completely. They can also be dangerous to anyone who later works on the drain. A drain auger or professional cleaning is safer and more effective.

Stop using all water in the house right away, including toilets, sinks, showers, the washer, and the dishwasher, so the backup doesn’t get worse. Keep children and pets away from any sewage, since it carries bacteria. Take photos for your insurance company. Then call a sewer professional as soon as possible to clear the main line and inspect for damage.
